A sympathetic conversion
In 2025, Village Conservatories completed one of our most characterful projects to date: a bespoke orangery in Beaminster, thoughtfully designed and built around an existing, ancient wisteria.
Designing an orangery around the garden
When Ms Macdonald approached us about adding an orangery to her beautiful Beaminster home, her brief came with one non‑negotiable condition: the mature wisteria that had climbed and twisted its way along the rear elevation for decades had to stay.
Rather than viewing the wisteria as an obstacle, we treated it as the starting point of the design.
- The footprint of the orangery was carefully set out to respect the position and spread of the plant.
- Structural posts and rooflines were adjusted so the wisteria could grow through and around the new framework.
- Glazing was detailed to frame views of the twisting stems and seasonal flowers, turning the plant into a living centrepiece.
The result is a light‑filled orangery where the wisteria is not just preserved but celebrated. In spring and early summer, the lilac blooms hang just outside the glass, creating a soft veil of colour and scent. In winter, the sculptural branches add texture and character against the pale sky.
A living feature at the heart of the room
Inside, the orangery feels as if it has grown out of the house and garden over many years. The wisteria, now an integral part of the architecture, blurs the boundary between indoors and out.
- The structure was designed to complement the existing stonework and traditional detailing of the property.
- High‑performance glazing and insulation ensure the room is comfortable year‑round, without compromising the health of the plant.
- Carefully planned views draw the eye to the wisteria from multiple angles – whether you’re seated at the dining table or relaxing with a book.
For Ms Macdonald, the orangery has become a favourite space in which to entertain, read and enjoy the garden in all seasons – with the reassurance that the much‑loved wisteria is flourishing.
